International Arctic Forum 2019

The Organizing Committee of the ‘Arctic: Territory of Dialogue’ 5th International Arctic Forum decided to relocate the Forum, which is to be held on 9–10 April 2019, from Arkhangelsk to the ExpoForum Exhibition and Convention Centre in St. Petersburg.

Permafrost is warming at a global scale, article figures

Today an article on permafrost was published in the Nature Magazine. The article is on permafrost warming and describes the use of the Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost (GTNP) for which the staff of the Arctic Portal was technically responsible for creating and hosts.

The 7th Arctic Policy Forum, titled “The Arctic and Innovation”, took place on Tuesday, 11 December in BEXCO, Busan, hosted by the Korea Maritime Institute (Director Yang Chang-ho), the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

There is a new contribution to the Polar Prediction Matters dialogue platform hosted by the Helmholtz Association. In this new article, Tanja Joona who is senior researcher at the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland in Rovaniemi, Finland, provides a personal report on the everyday life in Finnish Lapland (see also here).

Greenhouse gas levels

Levels of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have reached another new record high, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). There is no sign of a reversal in this trend, which is driving long-term climate change, sea level rise, ocean acidification and more extreme weather.

This week, the Special Observing Period in the Antarctic starts. For three months, weather services and international scientists will increase the number of atmospheric and sea-ice observations from different Antarctic land stations, during terrestrial field expeditions and aboard research vessels in the Southern Ocean.

Population Change in the Arctic Settlement in 2000 2017

Recently two very interesting articles on Permafrost were published in the Nordregio Magazine. The article "Cities on ice: Population change in the Arctic" summarises findings from two Nordregioprojects – Polar Peoples, which examines aspects of population change in the Arctic, and Nunataryuk, which studies the impact of permafrost thaw.
