A new study has been published by members of the APPLICATE consortium in the journal Advances in Atmospheric Sciences in which methods from numerical weather prediction are employed to understand how the Arctic influences weather and climate in mid-latitudes.

The 3rd Korean Arctic Academy took place from the 5th til the 15th of July. The Academy is hosted by Korea Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, co-organized by Korea Maritime Insitute ( KMI ), Korea Polar Research Institute ( KOPRI ) and the University of the Arctic and mostly held at KMI in Busan.

With the successful operations of CNARC fellowship program for the past three years, CNARC Secretariat is about to launch its Fellowship Program for Year 2017 - 2018. In this new round of application, fellowships shall be granted to 2 Nordic and 2 Chinese fellow candidates respectively, to advance their own research project that falls on CNARC’s research priorities or the themes of the 6th China-Nordic Arctic Cooperation Symposium (CNACS) to be hosted by Norwegian Polar Institute and Fridtjof Nansen Institute in collaboration with UiT The Arctic University of Norway in 2018, for a 1-2 month period in an institute within CNARC’s network. You are highly welcome to apply for this opportunity of academic exchanges.

From June 29 to July 2, 2017 a meeting of the Northern Forum Regional Coordinators Committee was held in Khanty-Mansiysk. The meeting brought together coordinators and representatives of the Northern Forum member regions, potential member regions, experts, the Northern Forum project participants, chairs and members of working groups of the organization. Representatives of such regions as Krasnoyarsk Krai, Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, Sakha Republic (Yakutia), Akureyri, Lapland, Alaska, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Kamchatka Krai, Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Primorsky Krai and Arkhangelsk Oblast attended the event.

1. Virtual Meeting of the Permafrost Carbon Network:
On June 13, we held a virtual meeting with synthesis leads to discuss updates on syntheses, emerging ideas and upcoming events. A lot of good progress has happened since AGU amongst other things with the following syntheses: 1) Expert assessment on subsea permafrost (also see item #6 below), 2) Thermokarst related syntheses, 3) PCN Hydrology MIP, 4) PCN 14C synthesis, 5) Vegetation Permafrost Syntheses, 6) Methane syntheses (also see item #7 below), 7) Non-growing season CO2 emissions, 8) Empirical bottom-up approach for methane fluxes, and 9) Deep Yedoma permafrost synthesis. It is also a region that is gaining in both geopolitical significance and public awareness every day. The complex relationship between the United States and Russia, along with the approaches of the six other Arctic nations, will continue to shape the region’s social, economic, political and environmental issues far into the future.
