The EU H2020 funded INTERACT (International Network for Terrestrial Research and Monitoring in the Arctic) project opens a call for research groups to apply for Transnational Access to 43 research stations across the Arctic and northern alpine and forest areas in Europe, Russia and North-America.

YOPP - Year of Polar Prediction

What kind of information is needed by the captain of a vessel navigating polar waters? Our knowledge of what really matters at the end of the forecast chain is rather limited. In order to strengthen the dialogue between polar forecast providers and users, the Year of Polar Prediction (YOPP) together with partners APPLICATE and Blue-Action are launching the Polar Prediction Matters dialogue platform.

UArctic Congress 2018

The UArctic Congress is an integral part of Finland’s Arctic Council chairmanship program, and open to the scientists, students, policy makers, businesses and all other interested stakeholders. The science section will focus on the themes and priorities of the Finnish chairmanship, including the goals of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the Paris Agreement under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Icebreaker sailing in the arctic

The Ice Watch ship observations initiative is an international collaborative program to coordinate Arctic-wide visual sea ice observations collected from ships operating in ice-covered seas of the northern hemisphere (https://sites.google.com/a/alaska.edu/ice-watch/). The associated observation protocol was developed in collaboration with the WCRP Climate and Cryosphere Arctic Sea Ice Working Group (CliC-ASIWG).

Xuelong in arctic waters

China's ice breaker, the Xuelong, on Wednesday finished crossing the central Arctic area, This is the second time the Xuelong goes through the Arctic. 5th CNARC symposium

With the successful operations of CNARC fellowship program for the past three years, CNARC Secretariat is about to launch its Fellowship Program for Year 2017 - 2018. In this new round of application, fellowships shall be granted to 2 Nordic and 2 Chinese fellow candidates respectively, to advance their own research project that falls on CNARC’s research priorities or the themes of the 6th China-Nordic Arctic Cooperation Symposium (CNACS) to be hosted by Norwegian Polar Institute and Fridtjof Nansen Institute in collaboration with UiT The Arctic University of Norway in 2018, for a 1-2 month period in an institute within CNARC’s network.

Cake found in Antarctica left by Scott expedition

A 100-year-old fruit cake has been found in the oldest building in Antarctica and those who discovered it think it looks fresh.

The cake is believed to date to Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova Expedition between 1910 and 1913.

EDU-ARCTIC competition 2017 winners at Þingvellir

They are competition winners in the EU Horizon 2020 funded Edu-Arctic project on promoting STEM education in Europe, a project the Arctic Portal is a partner in. The competition had more than 40 school teams from around Europe participating and 6 winners were found. Three of the winners along with the their teachers came to Iceland, two students from Poland and one from Italy.

Adoption of an international code of safety for ships operating in polar waters (Polar Code)

​IMO has adopted the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (Polar Code) and related amendments to make it mandatory under both the  International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL). The Polar Code entered into force on 1 January 2017. This marks an historic milestone in the Organization’s work to protect ships and people aboard them, both seafarers and passengers, in the harsh environment of the waters surrounding the two poles.

Aleppo Kebab, a Syrian kebab stand, opened today August 2, 2017 in the hometown of the Arctic Portal, Akureyri, Iceland.
The owner of the shop is Khattab Almohammad who arrived to Akureyri as a refugee of war in January this year along with 22 other Syrian´s.
