At the Arctic Coast Guard Forum (ACGF) held in Boston, Massachusetts (USA), the leaders of all eight Arctic Council member state coast guards have agreed to improve information exchange in the coming years, according to a statement released by US Coast Guard Commandant Adm. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will visit Denmark and Greenland on 16-17 June, accepting an invitation from Minister for Foreign Affairs Kristian Jensen and member of Naalakkersuisut (the Government of Greenland) with responsibility for foreign affairs, Vittus Qujaukitsoq. The visit will focus in particular on the Arctic cooperation, the climate, Syria, ISIL, Ukraine and trade. John Kerry will also meet with the Prime Minister.

Decreased sea ice extent in the Arctic is opening up new possibilities in telecommunications. A new undersea Internet fibre-optic cable system will be laid across the Arctic seabed, creating the shortest link between eastern Asia and western Europe via Alaska and the Canadian Arctic.

Iceberg in the arctic

A number of the world's food industry giants and fishing companies - including McDonald’s, Iglo, Birds Eye, Icelandic Seachill, Fiskebåt, the Karat Group, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Marks and Spencer, Espersen, Asda and others - have voluntarily agreed not to expand trawling for cod into previously ice-covered areas of the Barents Sea in the vicinity of the Norwegian Archipelago of Svalbard.
