Advances in Polar Science - Call for Papers Special Issue: New Horizons in the Exploration of Polar Biodiversity, Ecosystem and Genetic Resources

Details
Published: 24 February 2025

The Polar Regions host one of the harshest and most unique ecosystems on Earth, harboring a diverse array of micro- and macro-organisms. These inhabitants showcase remarkable taxonomic and genetic originality, presenting unparalleled opportunities for bioprospecting, alongside demonstrating extraordinary adaptation mechanisms for survival. Furthermore, polar organisms play crucial roles in facilitating organic matter decomposition, carbon fixation and sequestration, and biogeochemical cycling. Moreover, these organisms serve as pivotal indicators of global climate shifts. Therefore, exploring the polar organisms and the ecosystem holds profound and significant implications for gaining deeper insights into scientific frontiers such as global biodiversity, elementary cycling, climate change, resource utilization, and the awe of life in extreme environments.

Unfreezing the Past: Could Thawing Permafrost Release Deadly Viruses?

Details
Published: 18 February 2025

The 1918 Spanish flu pandemic was one of the deadliest outbreaks in human history, infecting an estimated one-third of the global population and causing the deaths of at least 50 million people. Unlike typical influenza strains, which predominantly affect the very young and the elderly, the 1918 virus disproportionately struck healthy young adults. The virus caused severe pneumonia-like symptoms, often leading to rapid respiratory failure. Scientists believe this high mortality rate was due to an overreaction of the immune system, known as a cytokine storm, which caused excessive inflammation and damage to the lungs. The pandemic spread rapidly due to the movement of soldiers during World War I, reaching even the most remote corners of the world—including the Arctic.
