China's 13th Arctic expedition team set sail from its peer at the Polar Research Institute of China, PRIC, in Shanghai on Wednesday July 12th for a mission that is expected to last through late September and cover a voyage of 15,500 nautical miles.

Northern deliveries bill passed to modernize Russian Arctic societies!

Russia's State Duma deputies approved on 25 July a northern freight deliveries bill aiming to create a legal and organizational framework for northern freight deliveries to societies along the Northern Sea Route, NSR, in the Russian Arctic. The aim is to provide additional opportunities to accelerate modernization of transport infrastructure in the Arctic.

The first floating LNG storage facility

Floating LNG Storage Facilities have arrived at ports in Murmansk and Kamchatka!

The Russian Floating LNG Storage Facilities projects are designed to optimize logistics and transportation costs of LNG transshipments at the eastern and western ends of the Arctic sea route. Novatek, the largest natural gas producer in Russia, ordered two floating LNG storage units from South Korean Daewoo Shipping Marine Engineering in 2020. The purpose is to shorten the transport distance for the specially designed and expensive ice-class tankers, reducing transport cost and increasing output volume.

Rosatom plans 15 floating Nuclear Power Plants in the Arctic!

15 new floating nuclear power plants may appear along the Northern Sea Route in Russia in the next few years as Rosatom sees such a volume of potential demand from development in the region. This was stated at the session "Northern Sea Route: New Challenges" during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum by the head of the state corporation Alexei Likhachev.

Cruise ships are bringing new numbers of happy passengers to the North, contributing to the local economy, notably in Iceland and Norway. They are also regrettably bringing alarming pollution as highlighted in the June report by the European environmental organization Transport Environment. Iceland and Norway now rank among the top ten European countries with the highest pollution levels from cruise ships! Arctic Portal has previously pointed towards this growing, unpleasant problem.
