The Russian Floating LNG Storage Facilities projects are designed to optimize logistics and transportation costs of LNG transshipments at the eastern and western ends of the Arctic sea route. Novatek, the largest natural gas producer in Russia, ordered two floating LNG storage units from South Korean Daewoo Shipping Marine Engineering in 2020. The purpose is to shorten the transport distance for the specially designed and expensive ice-class tankers, reducing transport cost and increasing output volume.

15 new floating nuclear power plants may appear along the Northern Sea Route in Russia in the next few years as Rosatom sees such a volume of potential demand from development in the region. This was stated at the session "Northern Sea Route: New Challenges" during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum by the head of the state corporation Alexei Likhachev.

Cruise ships are bringing new numbers of happy passengers to the North, contributing to the local economy, notably in Iceland and Norway. They are also regrettably bringing alarming pollution as highlighted in the June report by the European environmental organization Transport Environment. Iceland and Norway now rank among the top ten European countries with the highest pollution levels from cruise ships! Arctic Portal has previously pointed towards this growing, unpleasant problem.
