Food Industry Giants Agree Not to Expand Cod Fishing in Waters around Svalbard

A number of the world's food industry giants and fishing companies - including McDonald’s, Iglo, Birds Eye, Icelandic Seachill, Fiskebåt, the Karat Group, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Marks and Spencer, Espersen, Asda and others - have voluntarily agreed not to expand trawling for cod into previously ice-covered areas of the Barents Sea in the vicinity of the Norwegian Archipelago of Svalbard.

Norway Awards Licenses to Oil and Gas Companies to Operate in New Areas of the Barents Sea

On Wednesday 18 May, the Norwegian Government officially granted ten exploration licenses to oil and gas companies to operate in the Barents Sea. Norwegian Petroleum and energy minister Tord Lien presided over an official ceremony marking the 23rd Licensing Round in Hammerstein.
