Applications are now open for the inaugural BB Research Residency, an interdisciplinary program taking place in the High Arctic from 11–25 August 2026. Hosted in Barentsburg, Svalbard, the residency will bring together researchers, artists, educators, and early-career professionals to examine how the Arctic reflects some of the most pressing environmental, social, cultural, and technological transformations shaping the world today.

BB-Program in Barentsburg, SvalbardUnder the theme “The Arctic as a Mirror of Global Change,” the residency invites participants to engage with the Arctic not as a remote frontier, but as a dynamic and interconnected region where global developments become especially visible and accelerated.

Organizers describe the Arctic as both a living research environment and a platform for international dialogue on the future of planetary change.

The program combines field-based exploration, seminars, collaborative learning, and creative practice, offering participants an immersive experience in one of the world’s northernmost inhabited settlements.

Situated at 78° North, Barentsburg provides a unique setting where industrial heritage, environmental change, scientific research, and geopolitical realities converge.

Participants can apply to one of three residency tracks:

  • Natural Studies (Environment & Climate), focusing on Arctic ecosystems, climate processes, sustainability, and environmental research.
  • Social Studies (Society & Culture), exploring contemporary social, cultural, historical, and geopolitical dimensions of Arctic life.
  • Artistic Research (Art & Interpretation), providing a space for artists and creative practitioners to use the Arctic landscape as both subject and studio through visual arts, sound, performance, and other experimental forms.

According to BB Research, the residency aims to encourage interdisciplinary exchange across scientific, cultural, and artistic perspectives. By bringing together diverse participants, the program seeks to foster new ways of understanding how global challenges, from climate change and technological development to questions of identity, sustainability, and community, are manifested in Arctic environments.

The residency forms part of BB Research’s broader mission to establish Barentsburg as a platform for international collaboration and knowledge exchange in the Arctic. Through shared experiences in the field and engagement with local realities, participants will have the opportunity to develop new insights, projects, and networks that extend beyond the polar region.
