The Government of Canada has launched calls for proposals for two major funding programs aimed at strengthening national supply chains, expanding trade capacity, and improving infrastructure in northern regions.

Canada Invests in Arctic InfrastructureThe initiative includes the $5 billion Trade Diversification Corridors Fund and the $1 billion Arctic Infrastructure Fund, together representing a $6 billion investment in Canada’s transportation and infrastructure systems.

The announcement was made on March 3, 2026 by Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon, who highlighted the importance of trade corridors for Canada’s economy and long-term prosperity. The programs are designed to support strategic investments that improve transportation networks, strengthen supply chains and increase access to global markets.

Strengthening Trade Corridors

The Trade Diversification Corridors Fund (TDCF) will support projects that enhance Canada’s trade-enabling transportation infrastructure, including ports, railways, roads, and other logistics networks. The fund aims to improve the efficiency and reliability of trade routes, reduce congestion and supply-chain bottlenecks, and help Canadian businesses reach new international markets.

By improving the capacity of trade corridors, the program is expected to play a key role in Canada’s broader strategy to diversify its exports and strengthen economic resilience.

Investing in Arctic Infrastructure

The Arctic Infrastructure Fund, valued at $1 billion, focuses specifically on improving infrastructure in northern and Arctic communities. Projects supported through the fund may include transportation infrastructure and other strategic investments designed to strengthen connectivity, economic development and resilience in the North.

Canadian officials emphasized that improved infrastructure in the Arctic is essential for building a secure, connected and resilient North. The program also prioritizes collaboration with First Nations, Inuit and Métis partners, supporting Indigenous-led solutions and addressing longstanding infrastructure gaps in northern regions.

Supporting Economic Growth and Northern Development

Together, the two funds aim to enhance Canada’s ability to move goods efficiently across the country and to international markets while ensuring that northern communities have the infrastructure necessary to thrive. The programs are expected to contribute to economic growth, strengthen Canada’s supply chains, and improve regional connectivity across the country.

The launch of the proposal calls marks the first step in selecting projects that will receive funding, with governments, Indigenous organizations, and industry partners encouraged to submit proposals that align with the programs’ objectives.
