Applications now open for unique initiative connecting Arctic research, Indigenous art, and public engagement.

Main APECS Canada Competition

APECS Canada is inviting early-career researchers from across the polar sciences to apply for the 2026 Arctic Science to Art Contest, an innovative program that transforms scientific research into engaging visual storytelling.

The contest encourages emerging researchers to communicate their work on issues affecting northern communities through accessible, plain-language narratives, helping bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and public understanding.

The winning participant will have the opportunity to collaborate directly with an Indigenous artist to transform their research into a comic strip, creating a compelling and culturally informed way to share Arctic research with broader audiences.

In addition to the artistic collaboration, the winner will receive complimentary registration to the 2026 ArcticNet Annual Scientific Meeting, taking place in Halifax, Nova Scotia, from December 7–10, 2026. Their work will also gain international exposure through features on ArcticNet's blog or podcast, Arctic Minded, as well as the Arctic Research Foundation's blog, Arctic Focus.

The competition is open to all polar early-career researchers whose projects are conducted above the discontinuous permafrost line and are affiliated with a Canadian university, college, or other institution. Researchers from all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply.

By combining science, storytelling, and art, the Arctic Science to Art Contest highlights the importance of making Arctic research accessible and relevant to the communities it serves while celebrating creative approaches to knowledge sharing.

Applications are open now and must be submitted by July 15, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.

Researchers interested in participating can complete the official application form through APECS Canada.
