Arctic Portal Map: NATO members - North Atlantic Treaty Organization

Today marks a significant turning point for Sweden as it officially joins the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), becoming the 32nd member of the alliance.

Despite Sweden's longstanding commitment to neutrality, particularly to avoid tensions with Russia over the past two centuries, this move reflects a notable shift in its geopolitical stance.

In Washington, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is set to meet with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, where the formalities of Sweden's full NATO membership will be finalized, including the presentation of relevant documents. The official raising of Sweden's flag is scheduled for Monday at the alliance's headquarters in Brussels.
