According to the Bylaws and Rules of Procedure, the Northern Forum Secretariat and the Chairing region - Sakha Republic (Yakutia) inform you about the upcoming 12th General Assembly to take place in Yakutsk, Russia on November 4-6, 2015.
The General Assembly holds the Regional Coordinators Committee and Board of Governors meetings, plenary and round table sessions on sustainable development issues in the Arctic and subnational regions of the North to review existing projects, present new initiatives and events; notably – possibility of municipalities to join the Northern Forum, creation of a Business Council, etc
The main goal for the Assembly is to discuss and outline main perspectives and challenges for interregional cooperation in the changing World realities, approve the Northern Forum Strategic Plan, programs and projects, elect the Board of Governors, Chair region and Officers for years 2015-2017. Also, the event holds additional sessions on specific subjects and side events linked to the Northern Forum's activities.
The General Assembly will be attended by Governors and representatives of the Northern Forum member regions from State of Alaska (USA), Sakha Republic, Khanty-Mansiyskiy AO, Yamalo-Nenetskiy AO, Chukotskiy AO (Russia), Kamchatskiy Kray; Town of Akureyri (Iceland), Gangwon Province (Republic of Korea), Lapland (Finland); business partners, project coordinators and participants. Representatives from other regions, the Arctic Council observer organizations, other international organizations and Arctic business circles are also invited to the event.
General discussions of the 12th General Assembly will be held on following topics:
- Role of the Northern Subnationals in the changing World – new opportunities and challenges
- Understanding "well-being" in the Arctic – should UN HDR and AHDR do better?
- How small-size business can become an engine for regional development
- Business round table – making money out of unique tourism opportunities
- Climate Change and Preservation of biodiversity
- Development of the energy sector in remote communities.
By results of General Assembly, Resolutions accepting the new Chairman, members of the Board of Governors and Officers will be approved, along with the 2016-2017 Workplan and budget, new programs, projects and finally – the Yakutsk Declaration as a strategic document, setting main priorities for development of the organization.
