Northern Sustainable Development Forum Highlights People, Skills and Arctic Cooperation
The seventh Northern Sustainable Development Forum, held in Yakutsk, Russia, on 7–10 October 2026, focused on how northern communities can adapt to rapid technological, demographic and environmental change. The event brought together 626 registered participants and guests from 12 countries, attending in person and online.

A central theme was the impact of artificial intelligence on employment and education. Discussions highlighted the need for new skills and opportunities for northern residents, alongside the challenge of attracting and retaining young professionals and families. Infrastructure and industrial development were considered in terms of their contribution to jobs and quality of life.
The programme also addressed climate change, cultural heritage and international research cooperation, including preparations for the fifth International Polar Year. Regional partnerships, particularly cooperation between Russia and China, featured prominently.
The published report documents the forum’s discussions and participation, rather than a final declaration or agreed action plan. It highlights priorities for continued work connecting education, research, technology and community development across the North.
