PERMOS

A 50% position for a research associate at postdoctoral level is available in the coordination office of the Swiss Permafrost Monitoring Network PERMOS at the Department of Geosciences, University of Fribourg, Switzerland.

The Swiss Permafrost Monitoring Network (PERMOS) is tasked for the systematic long-term documentation of state and changes of mountain permafrost in the Swiss Alps. PERMOS is operational since 2000 and the network is carried by the six partner institutions ETH Zurich, SLF Davos, Universities of Fribourg, Lausanne, Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) and Zurich. It receives substantial financial support from MeteoSwiss, the Federal Office for the Environment and the Swiss Academy of Sciences. The successful candidate will be involved in administrative and scientific tasks of the PERMOS Office, which include e.g.:

  • Administration and general organisation of the network
  • Coordination and overview of the monitoring activities and measurement program with all PERMOS partners including the implementation and evaluation of monitoring sites, strategies and standards
  • Data management and processing within the PERMOS Data Base, including quality control, documentation, and publication. The successful candidate should work to develop strategies to process, quality check, homogenize and archive permafrost monitoring data, particularly 2- or 3-dimensional data from kinematics and/or geophysics.
  • Writing and editing of reports, maintenance of the website
  • National and international coordination of permafrost monitoring activities

Qualifications

PhD in geosciences, meteorology/climate sciences or related field with excellent skills in cryospheric sciences and a documented scientific background in mountain permafrost research • significant experience in the processing and homogenization of field data, experience with geophysical and/or kinematic data is highly desired • scientific computing skills, including programming, database and website maintenance (mainly R, MySQL, ev. Matlab, HTML/CSS) • excellent coordination, communication and writing skills (in English, preferably German and French) • interest in long-term monitoring strategies • motivation to work within a multidisciplinary team with a high degree of collaboration

Work and contract duration

50% Postdoctoral position to start immediately or as per agreement. The contract will be until end of 2018 (with one year trial period), an extension is planned. Employment and payment will follow the standards of the University of Fribourg.
