The IPY opening ceremony started at 8:30 this morning. The Ceremony was a spectacular show featuring music and dance followed by a number of distinguished speakers most notably prins Håkon of Norway. There was a general concensus among the speakers that this event, the international polar year was a extraordinary event and a rare pleasure as almost 50.000 researchers from 60 countries have participated in the IPY.
