Gordon research Conference: Polar marine Science 2009
Gordon Research Conference: Polar Marine Science - Beyond IPY Crossing boundaries March 15-20, 2009 Location: Barga, near Lucca, Tuscany, Italy The 2009 Gordon Research Conference will take place directly following the 2007-2009 International Polar Year (IPY), which has been one of the most significant internationally coordinated efforts yet undertaken in polar research. Many of the IPY campaigns have concentrated on marine sciences, and this conference will seek to capture the excitement of the polar marine science discoveries that have resulted from IPY research over the last two years. These results will provide a stimulus for discussing the directions that polar marine science might take in the coming years. It has become increasingly apparent than ever before that for Polar Marine Science to move forward, traditional disciplinary research boundaries must be crossed. To this end we aim to have speakers representing as many disciplines of marine science as possible, working in both the Arctic and Southern Oceans. The effects of climate change are anticipated to form a considerable part of the discussions. It is envisioned that recent changes as well as new findings from paeleo-studies will be discussed in the context of the geological history of the regions. Poster sessions will provide an opportunity for lively and informal discussion, in counterpoint to the more formal oral sessions. These poster sessions and related discussions will provide a forum for presentation of the latest results, seeding of new ideas and establishment of new collaborations. The overarching conference goal will be to bring together marine scientists from wide ranging disciplines for discussion of future research pathways within a cross-disciplinary context in order to better understand the implications of large-scale marine dynamics in the polar regions. IPY University Antarctic Expedition
Once in Antarctic waters, all students will make frequent field trips to the Antarctic mainland via Zodiac inflatables from the main ship. These landings will be supplemented by lectures and lab exercises in dedicated space aboard our expedition vessel, the M/V Ushuaia. The IPY Antarctic University Expedition 2009 has been endorsed by the IPY Joint Committee as a prominent and valued component of the IPY program. A key component of the Students on Ice â International Polar Year Youth Expeditions series, it represents one of the largest Education and Outreach initiatives in the World for the International Polar Year 2007-2009. The expedition will have approximately 70 participating University students, and 19 University faculty, scientists, experts, and educators. Undergraduate and graduate students from around the world and from any University can apply to participate.

Human Dimensions in the Circumpolar Arctic: An Interdisciplinary Conference under the Auspices of th
On October 8-10 2008 the conference “Human Dimensions in the Circumpolar Arctic: An Interdisciplinary Conference under the Auspices of the International Polar Year” will take place at UmeÃ¥ University, Sweden. The conference will pay particular attention to human life and conditions in the North in the past, the present and the future. Questions that will be addressed are how the possibilities for various kinds of social and economical developments have been understood at various times. Other important questions are how climate, ecology and different types of resource use have influenced conditions for life in the Arctic and the role of national and international politics for northern developments and conditions. Policy questions concerning the Arctic region will also be discussed during the conference. Representatives for indigenous peoples and politicians are therefore especially invited to attend the conference. A cultural programme including theatre, music and art illustrates some of the cultural expressions of life in the North. Symposium in Iceland - Looking beyond International Polar Year
Symposium: Looking beyond International Polar Year: Emerging and re-emerging issues in international law and policy in the polar regions The United Nations University-Institute of Advanced Studies (Japan) in conjunction with the University of Akureyri (Iceland), and with the involvement of Tilburg University (the Netherlands) and the Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law, Arctic Centre, University of Lapland (Finland) are pleased to announce an international symposium titled âLooking beyond International Polar Year: Emerging and re-emerging issues in international law and policy in the polar regionsâ to be held at the University of Akureyri, Iceland from Sunday 7th to Tuesday 9th of September, 2008. The symposium coincides with the launch of a new masterâs program on polar law at the University of Akureyri. The symposium is occurring towards the end of the International Polar Year. The purpose of the symposium is to bring together the worldâs leading scholars in international law and policy to identify emerging and re-emerging issues in international law and policy that relate to the Polar Regions (Arctic and Antarctica), and to map out a research agenda for future research beyond the International Polar Year. Internationally renowned experts on international law and policy and the Polar Regions will be invited to present papers on their views on the key emerging and re-emerging issues for the Polar Regions beyond the International Polar Year. The main aim of the symposium is to address the following questions: What are the main emerging and re-emerging issues in international law and policy relating to the Polar Regions warranting international action? Are the current international legal and policy systems able to address these issues? What issues require immediate action by the international community? What issues will require action by the international community in the longer term? What steps should countries take to address these issues? Which of these issues warrant further detailed research by legal scholars and other disciplines? These questions will be addressed across the following broad themes: Theme I: Challenges for the Protection of Biodiversity and Wilderness in the Polar Regions; Theme II: Sustainable Development and Human Rights; Theme III: Environmental Governance in the Polar Regions; Theme IV: Emergent and re-emerging jurisidictional issues in the Polar Regions; The second day of the symposium will conclude with a workshop session which based on the papers delivered by key note speakers and panellists will seek to come up with answers to the key questions posed for the symposium. The symposium will result in two major publications. The first is a series of peer reviewed journal articles to be published in the first edition of a new scholarly Yearbook to be called the Yearbook of Polar Law to be published by Brill Publishing. The symposium therefore aims to act as a major scholarly event and also to come up with policy relevant recommendations for action by governments and other international actors.
