4th World Reindeer Herders Congress, Kautokeino

4TH WORLD REINDEER HERDERS’ CONGRESS

March 30 – April 5, 2009,

The 4th World Reindeer Herders’ Congress is being held in Kautokeino, Norway. Kautokeino is in the county of Finnmark and is the largest Sami reindeer herding area in Norway. The Congress is a unique cultural and professional event in that it brings together representatives of reindeer herding peoples from around the circumpolar region. The Congress is organised by the Association of World Reindeer Herders (WRH) in cooperation with the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry. International cooperation in reindeer husbandry in modern times dates back to 1993 with the Reindeer Peoples’ Festival in Tromsø, Norway. Previous congresses have been held in Nadym, Russia, Inari, Finland and Yakutsk, Russia.

WRH is exited to host the 4th Congress in Kautokeino which also hosts the secretariat of WRH. Planning for the Congress is already underway and will combine a number of events that will showcase both the shared cultural richness of reindeer husbandry worldwide and also the many challenges that face this traditional livelihood with increased interest in Arctic resources and climate change. The Congress is being arranged in the week preceding the Sami Film Festival, the Sami Music Festival and the Easter Festival.
