CAFF Endorsed Projects

Back to the Future (BTF): Resampling research sites established more than 25 years ago to assess future trajectories of change in high latitude terrestrial ecosystem structure and function - NSF IPY Proposal now fully funded (March 2007)

Predictive Modeling of the Circumpolar Pelagic Seabird Distribution: Moving beyond a pilot study towards high quality online GIS database information for sustainable management decisions - IPY Proposal (March 2007)

Pan-Arctic Vegetation Change: A contribution to the Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program (CBMP) and the Greening of the Arctic Initiative (GOA).  It is extremely important to have data on the primary producers of the Arctic food chains – flora and vegetation. This project will provide essential data in applying ecosystem-based management to the Arctic; not only to understanding changes in biodiversity linked to climate change, but equally important to understand how these changes are impacting the social and economic stability of the Indigenous communities that rely so heavily on sustainability of Arctic ecosystems.  Endorsed in February 2007

EALAT:The Reindeer Herders’ Vulnerability Study.  Website - http://arcticportal.org/en/icr  .   Endorsed in January 2006

Greening of the Arctic (GOA): This initiative consists of a group of scientists who are part of four major components  The first component will examine in detail the 24-year record of greenness across the entire circumpolar Arctic.  The second component will examine NDVI-ecosystem relationships.  The third component will address the collection of ground biomass and site characterization along the NAAT and EAT transects. An outreach/education component of the project will develop a web-based Arctic Geobotanical Atlas (AGA) that will use a variety of tools to help students, educators, scientists, land managers, and the public to understand issues related to the greening of the Arctic.  Endorsed in January 2006

Health of Arctic Bird Populations: The aim of the project is to study geographic variation in infections, parasites, immune system functioning and pollution levels in birds.  To conduct an effects study on individual marked birds.  And to model future scenario’s of geographic variation and relating the findings to climate change, nature management and human health.  Endorsed December 2005

CAVIAR: Vulnerability of Human Communities to Environmental Change Across the Arctic.   Endorsed December 2005
Arctic Portal:  CAFF has been involved in its development and design
