Circumpolar Areas Protected Network (CPAN)

The Circumpolar Protected Areas Network (CPAN) Group was established in 1998 to oversee and advance the CPAN program and to provide the CAFF Board with advice on needed actions.  It aims to ensure sufficient protection of all habitat types in the Arctic.  Its various publications can be accessed here and its founding strategy can be seen in the CPAN Strategy & Action Plan (1996).  It has focused upon a number of thematic areas:


 

    • Protected areas enhancement
    • Stakeholder Participation
    • Marine Protected Areas
    • Establishing Linkages
    • Management and Monitoring

» Goals & Objectives

The goals of CPAN are to promote the development of a protected area network that has a high probability of maintaining ecosystem health and dynamic biodiversity of the Arctic region.  It also aims to iprove the implementation of the CPAN Strategy and Action Plan.  Its objective is to identify current and emerging protected area issues and concomitant initiatives to resolve them.
