Planned Products

Over the next five years, the CBMP will be producing a number of products designed to enhance and improve the effectiveness of existing Arctic biodiversity monitoring, raise public awareness and understanding of issues facing Arctic biodiversity, and help decision making at multiple scales - from local to global.  Some of the planned products include:

  •         An Assessment of Current Arctic Biodiversity Monitoring Capacity – a gap analysis that identifies elemental, geographic and statistical design deficiencies and inefficiencies;
  •         An Arctic Biodiversity Monitoring Strategy – a strategy for building and maintaining a comprehensive and cost-effective circumpolar monitoring program that addresses current deficiencies and inefficiencies;
  •         Integrated Monitoring Plans for the major Arctic biomes (Marine, Coastal, Freshwater, Terrestrial Vegetation and Terrestrial Fauna) that identify standardized monitoring approaches and protocols and identify the key parameters for monitoring across the circumpolar Arctic;
  •         A web-based data portal – this portal would synthesize, integrate and depict biodiversity data using a distributed network of web servers.  Status and trends information for a number of key Arctic biodiversity indicators and indices would be found on the web portal along with predictive models (e.g. downscaled climate impact models) and analytical tools that explore the underlying causes of trends in Arctic biodiversity;
  •         Regular and high profile assessments that report on key status and trends in Arctic biodiversity and the issues facing it;
  •         Training modules to support local involvement in monitoring;
  •         Back to the Future Assessments – retrospective assessments of biodiversity trends and statistical baseline establishment using existing and historical biodiversity information; and;
  •         Best Management Practices for Industry – working in partnership with industry, develop and monitor best management practices that minimize negative impacts of industrial activity on Arctic biodiversity.
