A Growing Web 2.0 Community Website
Thanks to the Arctic Portal we have the ability to become the Facebook of polar research, in a way. This page details some of the recent updates to the site and the features that are available for you to use to post information, connect with other APECS members, and more.
Feel free to submit any suggestions for how to improve the site or to lend us a hand to make it better.
Share your updates with the APECS community
We know how important it is to share information with each other and now the website has an easy feature to facilitate this. Once you are logged in, click on the news link from the left menu. At the top of this page click "Add" and this will take you to a form to fill in whatever information you would like to share with the other members. If you click on the "Subscribe" link at the top of this page, you can sign up to receive an email every time something new is posted to this section. We are still working on enhancing the posting to allow for images, etc to be included in these posts, but for now plain text and documents can easily be shared with the group using this method. If you have any questions with this or troubles, please contact APECS.
Posting Job Openings and Opportunities
Our wonderful Chief Information Office, Peter DiFiore, together with Trausti at the Arctic Portal, created a nice new format for posting and displaying job openings. If you haven't taken look recently, visit our Jobs page. If you come across a job opening, field school, or internship that you would like to post, simply send an email directly to the jobs site, but please format as follows:
- Make sure the subject line is descriptive: remove FW: or anything extra that doesn't directly describe the job
- Remove your signature and any list serve signature that might be in an email you received.
- At the very end of the email, add a line with the city and country where the job is located. Adding this simple line at the end of the email allows for it to be automatically geo-referenced and put on the map at the bottom of the jobs page. This allows for a quick view by location of open positions.
- If you see any errors in the postings, please contact APECS outlining the error and they will fix it.
Adding an event to our Polar Meetings list
Peter and Trausti also created a similar feature for posting any meetings that are interest to the APECS community. To view this list, visit our meetings page. To post meetings to the website, as with the jobs, send an email to the meetings site. We are not quite as far along with developing a map or calendar for the meetings, but are work on it. We ask that you follow the same specifications as the jobs emails and will update you again when more features for this section are developed.

List of Funding Sources
Thanks to Robyn Schofield we have a great list on funding sources from various agencies, foundations, institutions, etc. from several countries around the world on the website. She has also created a map that displays these sources by region. To view this new resource, click here.
This is a great start to a much needed resource for not only our research efforts, but to projects like the career development workshops, travel support and funding sources for education and outreach activities. This resource will be even more useful if everyone can add a source or two. For more information on this project or to help out, please contact Robyn.
You can also add additional funding sources by sending an email directly to the funding site, but please format as follows:
- Include a descriptive title of the Funding Source in the subject line.
- In the body of the email fill in the following information, in order:
* Type of Funding source: Project -traditional, Project-non traditional, Individual or Travel.
* Date(s) Application due:
* Agency:
* Country:
* Website:
* Specific Program(s):
