St. Petersburg, Russia Before the SCAR/IASC IPY Open Science Conference

Dear APECS members!

Please join us for our second APECS Council meeting, the first since the formation of the Council at Sanga Saby, Sweden. This is a very important meeting for APECS where we will formalize our organization, report on activities and plan for the future.

The meeting will be followed by a one day APECS Career Development Workshop and then the SCAR/ IASC IPY Open Science Conference. This promises to be a fun and engaging week in St. Petersburg. We’re sure to reignite the connections, energy and motivation from the Sweden meeting and welcome the participation of APECS members that would like to get more involved.

Council Meeting Agenda:

• Annual activity reports

• Approve Terms of Reference and Rules and Operating Procedures

• Discuss strategic plan for our organization beyond IPY

• Election of Executive Committee

• Plan future events, including end of IPY activities

We are hoping to be able to webcast this event so if you cannot make the meeting, please let us know if you would be interested in participating virtually. More details on this will follow.

• IASC (International Arctic Science Committee) have ‘early career’ travel grants available for those presenting Arctic research at the SCAR/ IASC Science Conference. (www.scar-iasc-ipy2008.org)

• APECS has some travel support for those attending the Career Development Workshop – apply at www.arcticportal.org/apecs or www.polarnetwork.org

• US Polar Researchers can also apply for funding to attend this meeting through a grant from the National Science Foundation (http://usscar.tamu.edu/scariasc)

• March 15: US Travel Grant Applications Due
