Popov Station in Bely Island

The administration of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area has started recruiting volunteers for an environmentalist expedition to Bely Island, due to begin in August 2016, Sergei Uramayev, First Deputy Director of the region's Department for International and Foreign Economic Ties, told the local media.

The environmentalist team is to include 20 people aged from 18 to 31. Volunteers are to be selected during the June 20-30 Utro (Morning) 2016 youth forum in the Urals Federal District. Applicants should e-mail their requests to the forum's organizing committee on the Ural Polyarny (Polar Ural) website.

Volunteers will have to pass physical fitness and stamina tests, undergo team-building courses and interviews with experts. During the second stage, the autonomous area will host a field camp session on July 23-30.

Expedition members will clean previously overlooked polluted areas. "The main polluted island regions near a weather station and a former military base have been cleaned during previous expeditions. Volunteers will now work in other small sectors. And experts from the Russian Arctic Development Center are charting their route," Uramayev said.

There are also plans to remove about 500 metric tons of scrap metal and trash that were collected during previous expeditions from the island for subsequent recycling. There are also plans to reclaim former waste dumps.
