Nigel Bankes

In Tuesday‘s Law Forum, Nigel Bankes will address: (1) the background to the AHDR Reports, (2) the contents of the legal systems chapters and some of the choices that had to made as to what to include or exclude, and (3) some reflections on the process. Nigel was the lead author for the legal systems chapter of AHDR I and the co-lead author (with Timo Koivurova) of the legal systems chapter in AHDR II.

Nigel Bankes is Professor and Chair of natural resources law, University of Calgary, Alberta Canada and Adjunct Professor, Faculty of Law and KG Jebsen Centre for the Law of the Sea, University of Tromsø, Norway. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Akureyri in 2010, in light of his contribution to Polar law, in particular, on the rights of indigenous peoples and on natural resource activities in the Arctic. Nigel is the author of numerous publications in oil and gas and energy law including “The regime for transboundary hydrocarbon deposits in the maritime delimitation treaties and other related agreements of Arctic states” forthcoming (2016) in Ocean Development and International Law, Nigel Bankes & Seline Trevisanut (eds), Energy from the Sea: An International Law Perspective on Ocean Energy, 181pp. (Brill Nijhoff, Utrecht and Boston, 2015) and (with Astrid Kalkbrenner), “Liability for Oil Spills from Oil and Gas Operations in Canada’s Arctic Waters” in Lila Barrera-Hernández et al (eds), Sharing the Costs and Benefits of Energy and Resource Activity: Legal Change and Impact on Communities, (forthcoming, Oxford University Press, 2016).
